Fleurs-de-lis, or flower of the lily, is a symbol of purity and perfection. When Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne as Emperor, he presented him with a blue banner covered with fleur-de-lis. Eventually, the fleur-de-lis became the French royal emblem, associated with French culture and heritage.
